Supporting children evacuated to Poland from institutional care centres in Ukraine

As a result of the escalation of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, some 1,600 children from institutional care centres in Ukraine have been evacuated to Poland. Many of them have disabilities, health conditions and developmental delays that require a high level of support. HumanDoc, together with Save the Children, have been supporting some of these children by providing child protection services within specialized centers in several provinces in Poland.

The HumanDoc Foundation has significant experience in projects supporting children and youth. The HumanDoc Foundation supports children who are at risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), children on the spectrum of autism, and children with disabilities. We also organize art therapy sessions for children, as this method has already proven extremely effective in our previous projects when building participants’ self-esteem, reducing stress, improving motor skills, and creating a community atmosphere.

Currently, as part of our collaboration with Save the Children Poland, we are supporting around 220 refugee children from Ukraine. Our mobile teams regularly travel to selected facilities across Poland where we work in cooperation with the centers’ managers and children’s guardians. Following a thorough assessment of the children’s needs, individualized plans are developed in coordination with their guardians to ensure their safety and wellbeing are met.  To ensure that the best interests of all the children are always met, HumanDoc also provides professional psychological and developmental support, as well as referrals for the necessary consultations and needed services with specialists.

Within the framework of the project, we cooperate with local educators, health, educational and local government units. Together with the staff of educational centers, we develop appropriate scenarios for the integration of Ukrainian children into local communities.
