HumanDoc Foundation, using its extensive and long experience in running shelters for people experiencing domestic violence in Georgia, decided to support WORI Organization from Uganda in its efforts. On the one hand, we share with them our experience, on the other, we help them raise the necessary funds.
Why are we supporting WORI shelter in Uganda?
Still more than half of society in Uganda, including women themselves, think that women should just “quietly” endure domestic violence, for the sake of the whole family and community.
Luckily, the social awareness is growing, thanks to which there are more and more places, where people experiencing violence can turn for help. Unfortunately, all of that is happening too slowly. We have to be aware that there are only six shelters of this kind in the whole country – it’s less than in any Polish provincial capital. This is why Rose, Annet and Rebecca, three women from a small village in eastern Uganda, decided to build a shelter for women and children who need help.
The construction took ten years. But today the shelter can accommodate thirty women and twenty children. All residents of this place not only have here a safe shelter, but also food, legal and psychological support.
Women organize a wide range of trainings to teach beneficiaries about their rights and to educate them, so that they can earn their living in the future. – WORI’s efforts result from questioning the traditional culture and the way of raising women in Uganda, were the patriarchal society makes women and girls less import and deprived of some privileges, on the contrary to men – says Rose Kiger, one of the founders of the organization.
These actions cost a lot and WORI needs our support. The more so that just 30 PLN are enough to ensure daily meals for EVERY resident of the shelter.

necessary things. The funds we raised were used to buy new beds, mattresses and bed sheets.
HumanDoc Foundation conducted a collection of money to support WORI. Together with our friends, Warsaw Club Plan B and Economics School Complex in Słupca, we managed to collect 6 737 PLN in a few weeks.
We sent this money to WORI and thanks to this contribution there are 8 new beds, 8 mattresses, 16 sets of sheets, 8 blankets, 8 mosquito nets (to protect the residents of the shelter from malaria).
We purchased also curtains to all eight bedrooms and kitchen equipment. We used the funds to install CCTV cameras, which we received last year, in order to improve the security in the shelter.
